Colorado Rockies Game Recap
Game Story
Boston’s bats were persistent on Tuesday, scoring in each of the first three innings.
The Red Sox started the ballgame with a three-spot in the first, all coming with two outs. Colorado starter LHP Ty Blach began his evening by hitting Jarren Duran with an 0-2 sinker, then proceeded to retire the next two hitters. Unfortunately, Rafael Devers clubbed an RBI double, and Tyler O’Neill followed with a two-run homer, his 19th of the season, to give Boston an early 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, with two outs and nobody on base, Blach issued a walk to Jamie Westbrook and allowed a single to Jarren Duran. Then, Rob Refsnyder roped an RBI double, scoring both runners and increasing the Red Sox lead to 5-0.
The relentless Red Sox attack continued in the third, with Tyler O’Neill launching his second homer of the night and 20th of the season. This time, O’Neill’s long ball was a solo shot that traveled 465 feet, giving the Sox a 6-0 lead.
The rest of the night, the score remained unchanged.
Colorado never mustered anything offensively as they were thoroughly dominated by Boston starter Cooper Criswell. The right-hander fired seven scoreless innings (career-high), allowing just five hits and one walk, while striking out four Rockies.
The silver lining for the Rockies was the performance of their bullpen after Ty Blach gave up six runs in 2.1 innings. Rookie reliever Anthony Molina appeared in his first game since July 11, throwing an impressive 3.1 innings of one-hit baseball. He did walk four, but he was able to dance out of trouble throughout the night and did not allow a run.
The other arm that appeared on Tuesday night for the Rockies was RHP Noah Davis, who was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday. Davis, in his second appearance of the season, controlled the Red Sox lineup for 3.1 innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out three.
Quotes
Ty Blach on his start: “I just didn’t feel like I was able to execute as many pitches as normal, especially down in the zone… It’s hard because you want to give everything you have for the team… unfortunately, I wasn’t able to come out and have the crispness that I’d like to tonight.”
Noah Davis on his appearance: “Pitching with guys on [base], that’s how you get the job done. It’s a little easier – with nobody on – to concentrate and make pitches, but coming in with traffic and still doing my best to execute pitches… it will be a confidence booster moving forward.”
Notes
The Rockies have now been shutout 11 times this season, tied for the second-most in the Majors.
Ty Blach’s 2.1 innings pitched is tied for the shortest start of his career.
What’s Next for the Colorado Rockies?
