Game Story
On Wednesday, both teams jumped out to a quick start in the first inning. Leading off against Colorado starter Ryan Feltner, Francisco Lindor jumpstarted the Mets offense with a base hit. Later in the frame, after Lindor swiped second base, Pete Alonso singled to score Lindor and put New York ahead 1-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Rockies tied the game on Ezequiel Tovar‘s 19th home run of the season. Tovar’s solo shot traveled 434 feet for his fourth homer in his last seven ballgames at Coors Field.
Instead of Feltner on the mound in the second inning, it was reliever Noah Davis. Bud Black revealed postgame that some sort of shoulder/lat tightness was the reason Feltner could not continue, and the ailment could land him on the injured list.
With Davis on the mound, New York greeted him with a flurry of singles to score a run. Former Rockie Jose Iglesias began the rally with a single, then advanced to second on a Ben Gamel base hit. Tyrone Taylor followed with a single of his own, scoring Iglesias and pushing the Mets back in front, 2-1.
The Rockies tied the game in the fourth behind a bit of good fortune. Brendan Rodgers began the inning with a ringing double against Mets starter Paul Blackburn. Then, after a passed ball allowed Rodgers to move to third, Kris Bryant dribbled a ball 61.1 mph off the bat for an infield single, scoring Rodgers and tying the game.
The score remained 2-2 until the ninth as both teams enjoyed solid pitching performances.
Colorado’s Noah Davis pitched four innings of one-run baseball while allowing only four hits. In the sixth, Chasen Shreve, making his Rockies debut, replaced Davis and fired a scoreless inning. Angel Chivilli and Tyler Kinley each pitched scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth, respectively, allowing just one baserunner apiece.
On the Mets side, starter Paul Blackburn was very effective, earning a quality start while throwing six innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out six.
In the ninth, Rockies closer Victor Vodnik entered the game, but struggled with command. After retiring Iglesias to begin the inning, Francisco Alvarez tripled off the scoreboard, and two walks ensued to load the bases with one out. Then, leadoff man Francisco Lindor stepped to the plate and lined an opposite-field single to score two runs, breaking the tie and putting New York ahead 4-2. Two batters later, Jesse Winker singled to score a fifth run, giving the Mets a three-run lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Rockies showed some life against Mets closer Edwin Díaz, as Michael Toglia led off with his third triple of the season. He would later score on an RBI groundout by Jake Cave, but unfortunately, that was all the Rockies could muster, as they fell to the Mets, 5-3.

Notes
Kris Bryant went 2-for-4 and recorded his third multi-hit effort over his last four games and is 12-for-36 (.333) with three doubles and five RBI since being reinstated from the 10-day IL on July 23.
Reliever Angel Chivilli is scoreless in five-straight outings (5.0 IP) with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Colorado Rockies are 20-18 at home since May 9.
What’s Next for the Colorado Rockies?
On Thursday, the Rockies will go for the series win in the rubber match of this three-game series with the Mets. Probable starters are LHP David Peterson (5-1, 3.47 ERA) for New York and LHP Austin Gomber (3-7, 4.66 ERA) for Colorado. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 MT.
