Player Summary
Brief Summary
Despite two seasons removed from his last strong performance, Vargas remains in the Rockies’ top 30 prospects. After signing for $500,000 in 2021, he impressed early with a 1.30 ERA in the DSL and a 2.98 ERA stateside in 2022. Tommy John surgery in 2023 wiped out 2024, and he struggled in 2025 (7.18 ERA). Still, his 45 strikeouts in 31.1 innings highlight his strong fastball and spin, leaving room for a potential rebound.
More detailed breakdown
Vargas hangs around in the Rockies’ top 30, despite being two full seasons removed from his last quality performance. Signed for a substantial $500,000 back in 2021, Vargas immediately made a name for himself, posting a 1.30 ERA as a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League. Vargas followed that up with a stateside debut in 2022, where his 2.98 ERA and sub 1.00 WHIP had the Dominican-born pitcher slated for the Rockies’ top 10 prospects.
Unfortunately, later in 2023, Vargas required Tommy John surgery, wiping out his 2024 season. Back in 2025, Vargas lacked feel and clearly had missed a beat. Vargas’s 7.18 ERA and 26 walks in 31.1 innings would doom most prospects but Vargas still struck out 45, thanks to his above average feel to spin the baseball and quality fastball in the low-to-mid-90s. From here, Vargas still has projection in his frame and could profile for consistent mid-90s velocity. If he can achieve that development and re-establish his above-average command in his first full season back from Tommy John, you may be looking at a top 5 pitcher in the system.
