Brief Summary
Max Belyeu, a toolsy outfielder from the University of Texas, followed a familiar path to the Rockies after the club selected him in the second round of the 2025 draft—mirroring their pick of his former Texas teammate Jared Thomas a year earlier. Belyeu debuted at High-A Spokane, where contact issues led to a .150 average, though a low .182 BABIP suggests some bad luck. He flashed his power with four home runs and profiles as a potential corner outfield starter.
More detailed breakdown
Max Belyeu is an exciting outfield prospect out of the University of Texas, who former Rockies’ GM, and current MLB commentator, Dan O’Dowd called “a stud athlete with power to all parts of the ballpark… and a rocket arm.” Belyeu was college teammates in 2024 with fellow Rockies minor-leaguer Jared Thomas. Belyeu actually had a higher OPS than Thomas in their final year together (1.090 to 1.069) despite being a grade younger. After taking Thomas in the 2nd round in 2024, the Rockies replicated that blueprint by taking Belyeu in the 2nd round in 2025.
Belyeu debuted with High-A Spokane after being drafted and was able to get 80 at-bats of experience under his belt in 21 games. While he struggled to hit for consistent contact (.150 AVG and 36% K-rate) he may have also gotten a bit unlucky with a mere .182 BABIP. Encouragingly, he was able to display some of his power upside with 4 home runs in his brief stint. Also, while not being known as a speed threat, he did go 3-3 in stolen base attempts.
After seeing Thomas’ success last year, the Rockies clearly think they have found something in the University of Texas outfielder pipeline. Belyeu will have a chance to prove the Rockies right by putting up a strong first full year in the minors. If he can continue to hit, and round out his overall game, Beyleu projects well as an eventual starter at either corner outfield spot. Written by Cooper Hearne.
