Series Recap
The Indians returned to action after a short break this week and took on the Vancouver Canadians for a three-game series North of the border. Spokane has dominated against Vancouver over parts of four series and entered this weekend’s series with a record of 16-3 against the Canadians so far through the 2024 season. The Indians looked to make the series short and sweep as they snuck out a win on Friday by a score of 4-3 in extras and won 8-6 on Saturday, but, unfortunately, Spokane couldn’t close things out on Sunday as they fell one run short, a final of 7-6.
The Indians needed extra innings on Friday night to take game one of the three-game series. Kyle Karros opened the scoring in the first inning with his 21st double of the season, driving in his Northwest League-leading 53rd RBI of the season, on the way to his 3-5 night at the dish. Blake Adams did not allow a single hit through his two-inning performance on the evening, but showed signs of struggle with control as he allowed four walks to allow two runs in the second inning before Mason Green took over and controlled the game for the next five innings, allowing just 4 H, 2 BB, but struck out five. Jose Cordova added a run to tie the game in the fourth, as Welinton Herrera returned to his former self and shut down the Canadians through the eighth and ninth inning, allowing just one hit and adding two strikeouts against the seven batters he faced, ultimately allowing him to earn his second win in an Indians uniform. In extras, Cole Carrigg delivered the go-ahead run before Dyan Jorge grounded into a double play that allowed GJ Hill to score. Brayan Castillo took over the closing duties as Carson Skipper was promoted you Double-A Hartford this week, and allowed just one run to earn the save and the win for Spokane.
Some powerhouse performances from Spokane’s most dependable hitters propelled them to a win on Saturday as Cole Carrigg went 3-5 with 3 R and 1 RBI thanks to a 3B and a solo HR, while Dyan Jorge also finished 3-5 with 2 R and 2 RBI, followed by Kyle Karros who went 4-5 with 1 R and 1 RBI. Carrigg, Karros, and Juan Guerrero helped jumpstart the Indians to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Canadians worked against Spokane’s starting pitcher Michael Prosecky who was promoted last week from Single-A Fresno and made his debut for the Indians, finishing with a line of 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, while adding 5 K. The game was back and forth as Spokane surrendered multiple leads throughout the night, eventually notting the game at six apiece as things headed into the ninth inning. Spokane’s baserunners were the recipients of a rough outing from Vancouver pitcher Chay Yeager, as both Carrigg and Jorge were able to reach home thanks to a pickoff error and a wild pitch. Felix Ramires closed things out for the Spo, closing out the Canadians to get his second win of the season.
The Indians aimed for a clean sweep of the weekend on Sunday and were cruising along with a 1-0 lead halfway through the sixth inning when the Canadians found their rhythm against Connor Staine, hanging five runs on the righty who had roughly managed to not allow a single hit until the five-run inning. Staine wasn’t as sharp as Indians fans have seen in previous outings this season. The 23-year-old pitcher hit two batters and walked four, but still struck out five, all within 5.2 IP. Down four runs, Spokane didn’t have any plans on giving up as EJ Andrews Jr. crushed a two-run home run to start the comeback, followed by RBIs from Juan Guerrero and Bryant Betancourt that gave the Indians a one-run lead. Welinton Herrera attempted to end the game in the ninth, but came up short as Vancouver’s Brennan Orf delivered a two-run double that made for plenty of happy Canadians fans as they earned the walk-off victory and fourth win of the season against Spokane. For Herrera, the loss was his first at the High-A level.
What’s Up Next Preview
The Indians will remain on the road and travel down to Eugene to take on the Emeralds for the fourth time this season. Spokane is currently holding interviews to see who their next closer will be after Carson Skipper’s promotion. Braxton Hyde or Davison Palermo seem like the top candidates given some struggles throughout the Indians bullpen.

Series Recap
The Fresno Grizzlies returned from their four-day break and welcomed the San Jose Giants back to Chukchansi Stadium, this time becoming the Lowriders de Fresno for the weekend. Fresno may have needed a longer break as they were shut out for the first two games of the three-game series, both with final scores of 6-0. In their last game as the Lowriders, Fresno attempted to salvage the series, and while they managed to snap their scoreless drought, they still fell to the Giants 9-1, completing the series sweep for San Jose.
On Friday night, the Fresno Grizzlies donned their alternate uniforms and became the Lowriders de Fresno as part of their weekend known as Fiesta Oso. However, the Lowriders had some engine trouble on Friday night even though the Giants had a 1-0 lead through the first five innings. Fresno starting pitcher Alberto Pacheco allowed a solo home run in the second inning before settling down where he would allow just two hits against the next 15 batters he faced before surrendering a two-run home run in the sixth inning, as Pacheco would be credited with his fourth loss of the season. Hunter Mann allowed another three runs off of four hits in the seventh inning, as the Lowriders couldn’t get anything jumpstarted offensively, struggling to get hits off of San Jose starting pitcher Shane Rademacher who fanned seven Fresno batters and allowed just four hits to earn his seventh victory of the season. Andy Perez was the only Fresno batter with multiple hits on the evening, while Caleb Hobson, Nick Gile, Felix Tena, and Fadriel Cruz added hits as well.
The Lowriders looked to forget Friday night and find a different route to victory on Saturday, but unfortunately, Fresno was greeted with more of the same issues that they had the night before. The Giants crawled out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning off of starting pitcher Bryan Perez who managed the game through his 4.2 IP, allowing only 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, but added 4 BB while teeing up 5 K. Perez would pick up his first loss of July through three starts, but the game was ultimately decided by Fresno’s continued struggles at the plate, as the team collected just two hits on the evening. Stu Flesland III allowed one run off of two hits but still struck out three after replacing Perez, while Tyler Hoffman struggled in the ninth, allowing two runs off of one hit—a two-run home run—while walking two batters.
In their final game of the series and last game as the Lowriders, Fresno looked to avoid being swept by the Giants and at the very minimum, snap their 24-inning scoreless drought that stretches back into their last series against Lake Elsinore. Andy Perez managed to end the streak in the first inning on a sac fly that brought Luis Mendez home, but that would be all for Fresno’s offense on the evening as San Jose scored eight straight runs. Starting pitcher Jack Mahoney lasted just four innings, allowing 7 H and 2 ER, before Sam Weatherly shined, doing his best to stave off the Giants offense, finishing with a line of 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, with 4 K to add. Still, Cade Denton was quickly chased after allowing five hits and four runs against eight batters, as Fresno’s pitching staff surrendered 17 total hits, stretching the lead out to 9-1, completing the weekend sweep.
What’s Up Next Preview
The Fresno Grizzlies are 5-10 so far through the month of July and with multiple promotions taking place throughout the Rockies organization, help may be coming soon in the form of players from Colorado’s 2024 draft class. The Grizzlies will take on the Stockton Ports next week, an opponent that they’ve had success against this season with a 14-4 record through three separate series.
