Player Summary
Brief Summary
Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2022, Bernard is entering his fifth pro season after producing at every stop from the DSL to Single-A. The 20-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder owns a career .306 average, matching his 2025 mark, and posted a 133 wRC+ in Fresno — the highest on the team (min. 250 PA) and sixth-best in the California League. At 5-foot-11, he lacks imposing size but generates electric bat speed and loud contact. His flatter swing path has limited home runs so far, but High-A will be the true test of whether his bat can keep climbing prospect rankings.
Detailed Breakdown
2026 Write-up
Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2022, Bernard is entering year five of his professional career. From the DSL, to the ACL and then Single-A in 2025, the lefty bat outfielder has performed at every level. His career batting average sits at .306, and fittingly, that is the same number he put up this past season. Out of any Fresno player in 2025 with a minimum of 250 plate appearances, Bernard had the highest wRC+, sitting at 133. Good for sixth highest in the California League.
The 5-foot-11 20 year old may not be the most physically intimidating prospect, but he packs a heavy punch. He has electric bat speed, and when he connects he hits the ball both hard and far. His swing path is considerably flat, which is the likely cause for low(er) home run numbers (only six in 2025). Despite strong numbers and results, the question mark next to his bat is keeping him lower on this list. High-A will be a real test, and if he continues raking he will fly up Rockies prospect boards.
Write-up from 2025
Derek Bernard left the Dominican Republic at just 16 to join the Rockies organization, and four years later, he’s making a name for himself in Low-A Fresno. After a slow start following his May promotion, the 20-year-old outfielder has found his rhythm at the plate. Over 60 games, he’s compiled an impressive .820 OPS with a 130 wRC+, driven by a smooth left-handed swing. Perhaps even more promising is the fact that he’s walking in nearly 12% of his plate appearances, an encouraging figure for a player with limited experience. Bernard is still a few years away from the majors, but his performance this season has firmly placed him on the prospect radar. Updated January 16, 2026.
