Player Summary
Brief Summary
Sterlin Thompson, the compensation pick for Trevor Story, hasn’t yet provided the immediate impact Rockies fans hoped for, but remains an intriguing bat. The 24-year-old slashed .296/.392/.519 with an .911 OPS, 18 homers, and a 118 wRC+ at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2025. His strong hit tool, highlighted by a 112.9 MPH max exit velocity, stands out. While a crowded outfield clouds his path, a hot Triple-A start could earn Thompson a first-half call-up.
More detailed breakdown
The Trevor Story compensation pick hasn’t exactly delivered the immediate return that Rockies fans may have hoped for, but Sterlin Thompson remains one of the more intriguing bats in the system. The 24-year-old posted a .296/.392/.519 slash line with an .911 OPS across 120 games at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2025, while also clubbing 18 home runs, 28 doubles, and swiping 12 bags. Good for a 118 wRC+ even accounting for the hitter-friendly PCL environment.
The hit tool is the carrying tool here. Thompson recorded a max exit velocity of 112.9 MPH, which was good for the 92nd percentile among all Triple-A hitters, and backed it up with a 10.3% walk rate and a manageable 20.9% strikeout rate. A mid-season mechanical tweak – adding a leg kick – helped unlock the best stretch of his young career.
The real complication is opportunity. The Rockies have no shortage of talented young outfielders, both on the 40-man roster and looming in the minor league ranks. His path to the majors has only gotten murkier over the course of the spring. Thompson was optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque on March 8th after a rough spring training.
Still, the bat profiles well within the confines of Coors Field, and with a new front office under Paul DePodesta, hungry to find production anywhere they can, Thompson’s window isn’t closed. A strong Triple-A start, paired with early struggles from the Rockies outfield, could lead to a first-half debut for him. Written by Eli Whitney.
