As a new minor league season emerges, so do the schedules, fun promotional items, and new food menus. However, on special occasions, a team will announce a new rebrand featuring alternate identities. This year we have exactly that as the Albuquerque Isotopes and Fresno Grizzlies have each announced new alternate identities. The Hartford Yard Goats will have two new identities with a nod to the northeast.
Albuquerque Isotopes – Duke City
The Isotopes boast one of the best brands in all of minor league baseball. They were one of the first teams to choose a creative, fun name that differed from the atypical “wildcats, lions, birds” that every team seems to go by. Choosing a name from an episode in the Simpsons made them one of the most popular brands in the minor leagues. Since then, their alter egos of the Green Chile Cheeseburgers and the Mariachis De Nuevo have also been very popular as well.
Their newest rebrand focuses on the “City Connect” jerseys that MLB teams have been doing recently. Their new identity “Duke City” focuses on their connection to Albuquerque New Mexico; where the team is located. One of the city’s nicknames is Duke City, and the previous minor league team was named the Albuquerque Dukes. Like the Mariachis De Nuevo, this focuses on the culture of the city. The “City Roots Series” will be a 5-game series played across the season and it will have giveaways, concerts, and fireworks.

Hartford Yard Goats – Thunder Chickens and Leaf Peepers
The Hartford Yard Goats already have an alternative identity trophy under their belt from their Bouncing Pickels rebrand last year but that wasn’t enough.
The Thunder Chicken alternate is a nod to the wild turkeys that live in the Northeast. Why a Thunder Chicken? There are roughly 35,000 turkeys that inhabit the area and are often refered to as Thunder Chickens for their loud wing flappin’.
The Leaf Peepers is a fun play on the 10 million people that travel to the area to see the leaves change in the fall.
Fresno Grizzlies – Fresno Tacos
The Grizzlies were the first minor league to rebrand to an alter-ego, becoming the Fresno Tacos in 2015. With it being 10 years since the iconic rebrand, the “Tacos” have unveiled their new look for the season. This year’s rebrand focuses specifically on how the Tacos are provided, thanks to the Taco Truck vendors. This new rebrand brings creativity to the original idea while retaining the creativity of the alter ego.
